Play-based therapy is an approach to therapy that uses a variety of playful activities to teach new skills. The child, many times, grabs a toy or starts an activity and the therapist/parents will join in. The therapist may find creative ways to imitate the child, find a new way to use the toy to encourage curiosity, or find a new toy or activity to use the same skills demonstrated with the first toy. The therapist may also introduce brand new toys and activities to engage the child in new learning experiences. Using a play-based approach promotes quicker learning of skills than drill and practice. It also allows for teaching skills the child is interested in developing at the specific time.
